Unprecedented number of Neotropical Bluets, Enallagma novaehispaniae, in Arizona

November 13, 2016
Location: Tres Rios Wetlands

The known US distribution of the Neotropical Bluet was limited to Texas (Paulson 2009) until the species was discovered in Arizona in 2010 (http://azdragonfly.org/news/new-arizona-species-neotropical-bluet-enalla...). Since then, the bluet has been found at five Arizona locations, but always in small numbers - no more than two individuals at a time, and only males. Upending this situation, during an odonate survey at the Tres Rios Wetlands in Maricopa Co., AZ, on 13 November 2016, 30-40 individuals - all males but also one female in tandem - were observed along a short stretch of stream flowing into the nearby Gila River. This find provides a sixth location for the species and represents by far the largest number of individuals reportedly present at a time anywhere in the state. It will be important to determine whether the Tres Rios population of Neotropical Bluets persists or the occurrence of the species at this site is ephemeral.

Approximately 20 individuals, including one pair in wheel (photo below), continued at the same location on 23 November 2016, providing a new late flying date record for the species in the state
