Claw-tipped Bluet, Enallagma semicirculare, in Pinal Co.: Northernmost state record and new late flying date for Arizona

November 27, 2016
Location: Queen Valley

The Claw-tipped Bluet is a subtropical and tropical species that, within the US, is largely restricted to Arizona, not counting isolated records in New Mexico and south Texas (OdonataCentral). In Arizona the species was until recently known only from locations in the south of the state (Bailowitz et al., 2015), but in 2016 it was discovered also at three locations in Pinal Co., well to the north of traditional sites. On 27 November 2016 a male (photo below) was found at an additional Pinal Co. site - Queen Valley. This find documents the northernmost location where the species has been seen in Arizona as well as a new late flying date for this species in the state.
