Pacific Spiketail, Cordulegaster dorsalis, in Apache Co.: New early flying date of species in Arizona

July 4, 2016

In Arizona the Pacific Spiketail is a rare species whose known distribution is limited to few sites in the White Mountains. The spiketail had until now not been recorded in the state before 13 July (2007; R. Bailowitz, personal communication).

On 4 July 2016 four individuals were observed along the North Fork of the White River and one of its tributaries (Apache Co.). This location is well within the state range of the species and the record extends its flying season in Arizona by almost 10 days.
