California Spreadwing, Archilestes californicus: Northernmost record to date for Arizona

October 29, 2016
Location: Queen Valley

The distribution of the California Spreadwing in Arizona is for the most part limited to the Southeast of the state and the species had until now not been found north of the San Pedro River (e.g., Dudleyville). On 29 October 2016 a male (shown below) was observed along the Queen Valley stream, well north of the locations where the species is known to occur. This record represents a significant northward extension of the species' distribution.
