Canyon Rubyspot, Hetaerina vulnerata in Maricopa Co.: new late flying date for the SW United States

The Canyon Rubyspot, Hetaerina vulnerata, in Arizona is normally found at elevations exceeding 850 m (Richard Bailowitz, personal communication). In October 2010, however, several individuals were observed at an usually low elevation (680 m) at Spur Cross Conservation Area, Maricopa (see related News page).

The species usually flies until approximately the middle of November. A mature male was observed at Spur Cross Conservation Area on 20 November 2010, thereby setting a new late flying date for the SW United States (Rich Bailowitz and Kathy Biggs, personal communications).
