Great Pondhawk, Erythemis vesiculosa, at Wickenburg Secret Ponds, Maricopa

Species: Great Pondhawk

The Great Pondhawk in Arizona is a scarce species that is regular during the summer monsoon season along the southern border of the state (Bailowitz et al., 2015), but is much less frequently observed further north and especially at other times of the year. Thus, three males of this species (two of which shown below) found on 26 April 2020 at the Wickenburg Secret Ponds, where this pondhawk had until now never been seen, was exceptional.
