Chalky Spreadwing, Lestes sigma, in Pima Co., AZ: third state record

September 11, 2016

The distribution of the Chalky Spreadwing in the US is for the most part limited to the southern half of Texas (Odonata Central) and the species is rarely observed outside that region. In Arizona, it was found for the first time in 2013 at two locations near the Mexican border (Buenos Aires and San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuges), but it was not reported anywhere during the following years. Providing a third state record, a female (picture below) was found on 11 September 2016 at State Tank in the Buenos Aires NWR. This female was observed ovipositing, raising the possibility of this species becoming more established in the state in the coming years.
