Band-winged Meadowhawk, Sympetrum semicinctum, in southern Yavapai Co.

September 1, 2019

Band-winged Meadowhawks in Arizona are for the most part found at scattered locations in the northern half of the state and are rare in the low deserts, and there is no record of the species for Maricopa County. On 1 September 2019 a male, shown below, was observed along the Agua Fria River in Black Canyon City, Yavapai County. This location is less than one mile north of the Maricopa County line. It will be of interest to see whether the species eventually makes its way into the latter county.
